My experience of buying our 4th car in the UK ( as a second car)

This post is about the 4th car we bought in the UK, as a second car for my wife in 2022 to upgrade from this

We bought an approved used Vaxhuall Corsa ( '17 plate, 14k miles driven, serviced at dealership) for :
100 GBP holding deposit to take the car off the market
1900 GBP deposit
138 GBP a month for 2 years

The cost of that car at that time was 8,500.
So essentially we paid:
100+1900 + (138x24) = 5,312 GBP for the 2 years.

We decided to buy the car off to use it as a part exchange for our next car.
The balloon payment was 5,600 which we paid to buy the car.
So in total, for a 8,500 GBP car in 2020 , we paid 10,912 GBP in total.

We started visiting various dealerships to choose a small, automatic hatchback which had reversing camera, parking sensors and android auto. These specifications were a must!
Most new cars come with these features, but as you are aware the cost of new and old cars has gone up as well as interest rates for finance deals.

We looked into approved used cars - unfortunately, due to delays in manufacturing new cars, tthe price of approved used cars has gine up and the interest rates have gone up as well for approved used cars. So we were limited to a new car for the specifications we were looking for,

We first visted Toyota and test drove a new Yaris.
We selected the particular modeal we wanted and the price of a new car on a PCP deal was cheaper than an approved used car of the same generation. Hence we decided to go for a new Yaris.
With all options, the total price was 24,000 GBP.
They were buying the Vaxhual Corsa for 8,000 GBP
Monthly PCP for Yaris : 156 GBP a month
We found that this was a good deal and hence signed eveything and car would be delivered in April, 6 months from that time.

When we left the dealership, we did not feel right about it - A small toyota for 24k! We felt we could do better.

So we decided to start emailing other dealerships.
Audi was willing to buy the corsa for 9,925 GBP which made us think that Toyota was probably not giving us a good deal.

Plus they were not giving a good deal on an Audi A1 which is the smallest hatchback audi can offer and the monthly was above 200 GBP.

Vaxhuall was offering a new corsa for 240 / month

We decided to check out a VW Polo - we did not even email them because we did not think we would get a good deal on a VW Polo.
So we walked in, without any information or any clue and just asked what options we had.
They offered an excellent deal:
New Polo 1.0 Life DSG with reversing camera and GARDX protective coat. You can have a look at the basic specifications here:
https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/new/polo.html#trims
Automatic with all specifications - parking sensors, they would fit a reversing camera at the dealership which was VW approved, automatic and very decent base specs.

Costs :
Cost of car: 22k
3k cash back from dealership- transferred into account upon collecting car
Extra things - 600 GBP for reversing camera fit at the dealership hence included in warranty
                    - 269 GBP for first 2 services
500 GBP dealereship contribution
They bought our corsa for 9,000 GBP
The dealership suggested that we could bring the PCP down by using the cash back amount.
The oiriginal PCP deal was
212 GBP per month
So I called the VW financial services once the dealership had depoisted the cash back into my account and the monthly PCP came down to 141.75 GBP!

So, overall - I paid 5,620 to buy off the Vaxhuall Corsa - used that as a part exchange and will pay 141.75 per month for a new VW polo.

So for a very reasonable monthly amount, I can drive a new car which is well specced:

I hope this blog post helps anyone looking for a small hatchback.
